Tour Details

Cerro Negro is one of Nicaragua’s 28 volcanoes and it’s between the country’s 7 active ones, but it is actually the youngest and probably one of the most active in the Central American region. Its first eruption was on April 13, 1850. Now, 174 years later, this volcano has reached 720 masl (2360 feet). Its structure is loose rocks and shifting sand, which makes it perfect for extreme adventure.

Our tours depart daily in the morning at 8 am and in the afternoon at 2 pm. We leave Leon in a 4×4 vehicle, we travel 28 kms to the base of the volcano. The road to Cerro Negro is sandy, rustic and picturesque. Once we arrive at the base, we start climbing, it will take us about an hour and once at the top, we will stay for half an hour to admire the surroundings of the volcano.

Once we are ready to descend, we will dress in our special suit that will cover us from head to toe and we will put on our gloves and eye protection, then, our experienced guide will give us instructions on how to use the boards and the necessary maneuvers needed to avoid an accident. It will take just around 10 minutes to descend; after this, we will get back to Leon.
