At 6:30 PM, equipped with flashlights and the guidance of a trained naturalist, we begin a one-hour walk in the lower zone of the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve. This first part of the hike takes you through the dense transition zone between agricultural land and protected forest. It’s an active area for nocturnal animals, and the sounds of frogs, insects, and night birds immediately immerse you in the experience. After the walk, we board a 4×4 vehicle and continue climbing to 1,150 meters above sea level, reaching the cloud forest zone where the rarest sightings await.
