This package is a combination of adventure, steep volcano climbing and at the end, several well-deserved nights on the Corn Islands, Caribbean of Nicaragua. In this adventure, get ready to sense the Cerro Negro Volcano, Somoto Canyon, El Puma, highest crater of the Mombacho Volcano, Apoyo Lagoon, Lake Nicaragua and the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean.
Day 1. Managua’s Airport + Transfer to Hotel Nearby
Welcome to Nicaragua, The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes! At the airport, our driver will be waiting for you with your name tag in a sign; once you land and finish the immigration process. You will drive only 10 minutes to the hotel. Here you will spend the night and the next day you will be picked up to start our acclaimed adventure.
Day 2. Transfer to Leon + Cerro Negro Volcano Boarding
Good morning, we hope you were able to rest as you deserve! After breakfast, our driver will pick you up and together you will drive 2 hours to the always beautiful Colonial city of Leon. Upon arrival in Leon you will check in and then you will have a free time to explore the city on your own and also, you can have lunch in any of the many restaurants that are around the city. At 2:00 p.m., our guide and driver will both pick you up at the hotel and together you will go on an incredible tour of the Cerro Negro Volcano.
It is undoubtedly a little known and little explored treasure. The Cerro Negro Volcano is a jewel for adventurers. Its geological history began on April 13, 1850, in a flat valley 28 kilometers from León, the first eruption was heard from Leon. 174 years later, we have today a volcano of 728 meters above sea level; thus, the great Cerro Negro is the volcano with the highest average growth in America with 4 meters per year.
Today we will climb its rocky side and descend on the board on another side composed of shifting sand. As we climb, our view will be dazzled by all the beauty that can be seen in the surroundings, and once at the top, we will have a 360 degree panoramic view that will be complemented by one of the most beautiful sunsets in Central America.
Once we are ready to descend, our expert guide will show us step by step the best way to slide down the hill on our board. Before launching, we will use our special suit to avoid any scratches in case we fall, which almost never happens and if it does today, it is not something to be afraid of, it is part of the adventure. At the end of this tour, you will return to the hotel for a refreshing shower and then you will get to know the city at night, have dinner and have a cold beer if you wish.
Day 3. Transfer to Somoto + Somoto Canyon Hike
Our adventure continues today to one of the most beautiful sites in the country. The Somoto Canyon. After breakfast, at 8:00 o’clock. Our driver and guide will pick you up and drive a little over 4 hours to the majestic Somoto Canyon. Before our tour, we will have a typical Nicaraguan lunch. (rice, beans, plantain slices, cheese, meat, chicken or pork).
Day 4. Transfer to Peñas Blancas Massif + Arcoiris Waterfall
The Peñas Blancas Massif is one of the oldest geological formations in Nicaragua. Its volcanic rock walls reach 1800 meters above sea level and its surroundings are home to lush cloud forests and its ecosystem is inhabited by pumas, ocelots, jaguars and the great quetzal as emblematic species.
Today, after breakfast at our hotel in Somoto, we will go to the great Peñas Blancas Massif. Our departure is at 8:00 am, we will drive 3 hours to the base of the Massif. Here we will have lunch and at 2:00 pm, we will climb the Arcoiris waterfall. Our hike will take a little over two hours; in it, we will observe a great variety of flora, listen to many birds and above all, enjoy the rivers, springs and waterfall, all in a very green and fresh environment with lots of nature.
Once we finish our tour, we will return to our lodging and then we will go for a swim in a nearby river to end our tiring day with a refreshing dip in this wonderful place. Then we will have dinner and an early night’s sleep here at the base of the Peñas Blancas Massif.
Day 5. Transfer to Apoyo Lagoon + Relaxation
Good morning, we hope we had a wonderful night today!
Today we get up, have a cup of coffee, then breakfast and at 8am, we leave the north and head to the Pacific of Nicaragua. We will drive about 5 hours and once we arrive at our destination, the stunning Laguna de Apoyo; we will enjoy an afternoon of relaxation. Here in this place we will have lunch, dinner and we will also spend the night in a local hotel.
Day 6. Mombacho Volcano Puma Trail
Our tour today, the El Puma trail, is for all our good climbers, one of their favorite adventures in Nicaragua. 4 kilometers of trekking, spectacular viewpoints, unique flora and fauna such as monkeys, sloths, birds, etc. It will all be part of our wonderful tour. For this tour, we will leave Apoyo Lagoon at 9:00 and we will drive 40 minutes to the base of Mombacho Volcano. Once we get there, we will take a 4×4 to reach the 1150 masl and from there, we will start our amazing tour to the Puma Trail
El Puma is a trail that takes you to the heart of the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve, it takes us through different types of forests; dwarf forest, deciduous dry forest, cloud forest etc. and the views it provides will make you dream the rest of your trip, this is the weather permits and it is not cloudy and if it is, that it clears as it often does, this to let us see the charms that surround the Mombacho Volcano.
Something very important we want to mention is that this is your chance to see this unique forest in the Pacific of Nicaragua.We say this because the emanation of volcanic gasses with chemical components is now so strong, or perhaps because the winds have changed course, the surrounding forests are being destroyed. Hence, an enchanted forest is also something we are going to admire on this tour.
But this enchanted forest used to be a dense and very cloud forest, but nature today is killing nature and perhaps when you return, the famed cloud forest of the Mombacho Volcano will no longer exist.
Once we are done with this tour, we will head back to Apoyo Lagoon so we can keep on enjoying the refreshing and healthy water of this volcano lake.
Day 7. Kayak Tour + Night in Granada
Good morning! Today, we will have breakfast and head to Granada at 9:00 am. Before going to the hotel, we will do a kayak tour in Lake Nicaragua.
A very effective way to explore the flora and fauna from such a close distance is by kayaking. In addition, kayaking protects the environment and takes you through channels and inlets where a motor boat could not enter.
Our two-hour tour will take us through the nooks and crannies of the islets in Lake Nicaragua. This place is home to more than 140 species of colorful birds, howler monkeys, iguanas, turtles and more. We have no doubt that you will have a great time in the company of our experienced guide. Admiring the flora, fauna and an environment loaded with unique panoramic views is the perfect combination we need to have an amazing 2-hours tour.
Day 8. Transfer to the airport + Domestic Flight to Corn Island
Good morning! Early in the morning, we will drive an hour to the airport to take a domestic flight to Corn Island. Once we arrive at the local airport on the island, we will be transferred to the hotel and here, we will spend several days.
